I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and is not getting trampled by the Black Friday crowds! Welcome to the 2nd day of Wrap it Up! We kicked off day 1 with brown paper and washi tape gift wrap and a DIY stamped fabric tutorial! Today you’re gonna learn how to make a pillowcase. I love this idea because the gift wrap actually doubles as a gift!
HI C.R.A.F.T. readers!! I am Caroline and blog at the sewing & DIY blog, SewCaroline.com. I am so excited to be a part of Jamie’s Wrap it Up series. I jumped all over it when she asked me!
I love the idea of giving a gift in packaging that can be reused. Not just reused as in recycled, but reused as in actually using it again! So, I thought, what better way to give a gift than wrapped in a pillowcase! I mean, who doesn’t love a fun and unique pillowcase.. you can sleep on it nightly OR you can just take it with you on trips.
A pillowcase is one of the very first things I ever learned how to sew, so I’m excited to share with you how it’s done!
You will need:
- -3/4 (by width of fabric) yard of quilting cotton (for body of pillow case)
- -1/4 (by width of fabric) yard of quilting cotton (for cuff of pillow case)
- -3″ (by width of fabric) of quilting cotton (for accent piece of pillow case)
Instructions:
Step One: Take the 3/4 yard piece of fabric and lay it right side up on the ground. Don’t worry about cutting off the selvedges, we will do that later.
Step Two: Take your 3″ piece of fabric, fold, and press it in half lengthwise with the WRONG sides together. Match those raw edges with the raw edges of your fabric laying face up.
Step Three: Take your 1/4 yard piece of fabric, fold, and press it in half lengthwise with the WRONG sides together. Match those raw edges with the other pieces already laying face up. You’ll pin through the five layers of fabric you have stacked.
Step Four: Sew, using a 1/2″ seam allowance.
Step Five: Fold your pillow case so the cuff and accent seams line up, right sides together. Pin and sew around the two open sides (not the side of the cuff)
Step Six: Flip it right side out and you’ve got yourself a pillow case!
Now it’s time to stuff it with gifts!!!
I can’t wait to see all the pillow cases you make and stuff this holiday season!
