Hopefully you’ve had a chance to get a little Christmas shopping done. Next step in the holiday extravaganza? Wrap those gifts up! I don’t like buying fancy themed wrapping paper, I like to use really awesome free things and come up with creative gift wrapping ideas. Here are 16 unique ways to utilize thing you probably already have in your house like old clothes, fabric scraps, packing tape, plastic bags and even old stockings!
Kraft wrapping paper ideas
Kraft paper is my all time favorite way to wrap holiday gifts. I love that you can buy one roll and it lasts for multiple years!
Where do you buy kraft paper?
I’ve had the same giant roll of kraft paper for years. You can typically buy rolls of brown kraft paper at hardware stores, but it will be called builder’s paper. Builder’s paper is much thicker than regular kraft paper. One tip for builder’s paper, you will want to use packing tape to help it stay together!
Creative gift wrapping ideas
1. Sharpie markers and kraft paper
All you need is your giant roll of kraft paper and a permanent marker! If you don’t have kraft paper on hand you can easily use brown paper bags from the the grocery store. Brown paper packages are the perfect canvas for creative gift wrapping.
2. Scribble wrapping
Let your toddler handle the gift wrap! I wrapped everything in kraft paper and let him scribble all over it with marker. Then, I added some crazy red yarn and our Chrsitmas card as a gift tag for relatives. See more toddler friendly Chrsitmas decorations here.
3. Splatter paint
Kraft paper plus splatter paint is the perfect combination. Chunky white yarn is pretty (and less expensive) alternative to ribbon too.
4. Kraft paper and stamps
Good ol’ kraft paper adorned with stamps, felt start, twine bow, and a bell! Here’s another fun idea for using a simple letter stamp on kraft paper to personalize for the recipient.
5. Kraft paper and glitter
I love the look fo the gold glitter on kraft paper. Sarah has some ways ideas for adhering glitter to the gifts in straight lines and in polka dot form.
6. Kraft paper and washi tape
My go to gift wrapping method is kraft paper.
I love kraft paper because you can use the giant roll for different occasions all year long. To spruce it up I use tamps, washi tape, or my daughter’s favorite method- paint!
7. Tape monograms
Use patterned tape to make designs or monograms on the kraft paper. Use a sprig of red berries, candy canes, or greener as gift topper.
Fabric gift wrapping ideas
I love the idea of using fabric to wrap gifts because it is reusable! You can use the same fabric to wrap gifts again and again.
8. Stamped fabric
Use an old white sheet to stamp lots of reusable wrapping paper at once. Rachel has some great ideas for making DIY stamps at Lines Across. Add a golden ribbon with a simple bow and voila!
9. How to sew a pillow case
I love that the gift wrap is part of the present! Caroline shares how to sew a pillowcase and then use it as the gift wrap for another present. Anyone can sew a pillowcase!
10. Old stocking gift wrap
Nancy turned old stockings into gorgeous gift wrap! She used a simple paper doily, twine, and greenery to add interest to the grey stockings. The white stockings are decorated with polka dot nail polish!
11. Empty food box gift wrap
My kids love to use empty cardboard boxes to wrap presents for their friends! Add a ribbon and bow and this is the easiest “wrapping” you’ll ever do!
12. Using old clothes
Carmel used her kids old worn out clothes to embellish gifts wrapped with simple kraft paper, baker’s twine, and greenery!
13. DIY Picture gift wrap
This DIY gift wrap idea does not involve fabric, but it is adorable so I had to include it. Kristen created her very own picture wrapping paper by printing photo collages on blue print paper at Staples. Genius!

14. Cupcake liner bows
Linda used cupcake liners to make a unique DIY bow for her package wrapped in kraft paper. Here’s another fun way to use cupcake liners as bows!
15. Plastic bag pom poms
Use plastic grocery store bags to make DIY snowball pom-poms for gifts!
16. DIY fabric bows
Again wrap it up with kraft apper and tie a super simple knotted bow with a scrap peice of fabric! It doesn’t get any easier than that.
