Maybe attach your favorite cookie recipe and add a few holiday hand towels!
What you need to paint wooden spoons
- Wooden spoons (Here’s a set for a great deal!)
- Paint pens
- Acrylic paint
- Blue tape
- Paint brush
How to paint wooden serving utensils
Step 1- Tape
First, tape each spoon about 1/2 way up the wooden handle. Painters tape will ensure the straightest line.
Step 2- Paint a base coat
I gave 2 spoons a solid coat of red and 2 wooden spatulas a solid coat of green. Give the paint time to dry, this might be the hardest part of the entire project!
Step 3- Use paint pens for details
I used paint pens to add details to the solid red or green coats of paint. The cursive word “peace” was done with a paint pen. Writing words on a flat surface is easy, and I promise even if you think your have ugly handwriting, you can make a cursive word look beautiful! My tip is to go over the letters multiple times. Be sure to let the paint dry in between each session. This way you can make letters thicker in places. It’s best to keep the word between 3-6 letters. Words like “joy”, “peace”, “love”, “merry”, and “bright” are all fun options. You could also personalize the gift and use a last name or a special date.
Step 4- More details
Don’t be afraid to go back and add more details to the wooden spoons. Little dots and highlights go a long way. I used a green and gold paint pen to add simple stripes to the green spoon. Then, added tiny polka dots with a red paint pen. I’m wishing I would have added a little highlight to the red holly berries right now.
Another fun thing about handmade gifts is that they can so easily be personalized. Consider adding a last name or a silly inside joke. For an extra special touch, wrap up the utensils in a holiday kitchen towel and secure with a red ribbon or bakers twine and a favorite cookie recipe. This would make a great teacher gift too!
