Patriotic Crafts

In honor of Veteran’s Day on November 11th, I am teaming up with The Home Depot Foundation to host a free kid’s workshop in San Antonio, TX! The kid workshops at Home Depot are always free and always provide everything you need to build a project. At the Nov. 7th workshop kids will build and take home a jet! The workshop will be happening at Home Depot’s all across the country, but if you happen to be in San Antonio we’ll be doing something extra special! We are teaming up with Haven for Hope and creating a collaborative piece of patriotic art to hang in their building in San Antonio!

I made a small 8″x10″ paint chip flag to show y’all, but this weekend, we will be crafting up a giant 20″ x 28″ paint chip flag with 100’s of kiddos! It is going to be awesome!

To make a paint chip flag you need:

• 1 piece of white card stock
• Glue
• Scissors
• 2-3 blue paint chips
• 10-12 white and red paint chips
• Pencil
• Hole punch
• Ruler

Start by dividing up your white card stock into 13 lines to form the stripes of the flag. This obviously does not have to be perfect, but having some kind of a guide makes it much easier to keep your stripes straight and orderly. The blue portion is simple, it sits on the 4th white stripe and makes a rectangle. Next, cut start cutting up your paint chips! Then, glue the paint chip strips onto your white card stock. I suggest doing all of the white stripes first, and then doing all of the red stripes. Save the blue rectangle for last!

The last thing you need to do is to make the stars and trim the edges! The stars are simple, just use a hole punch and white paint chips to punch out 50 dots. Then glue the dots on to the blue rectangle. Let your flag dry for a few minutes, and then turn it over and trim the excess paint chips to make a nice pretty rectangle.

I can’t wait to make a giant version of the paint chip flag with lots of kids on Saturday!
