Maxwell loves taking a bath, but hates getting his hair washed. Like screaming, kicking, and splashing water everywhere when you say the words “hair wash”. Basically just makes it as difficult as possible to get the job done. It’s even more frustrating because I know that water on his face is not the problem. He will happily jump in and go under water in the pool. I teamed up with SoCozy products to bring y’all our tips and tricks for happy hair washing. We’ve had to get creative, but I can safely say that we can entice Maxwell to wash his hair with no tears with one (or occasionally more) of the tips below.
13 Tips for Washing Hair Without Tears:
1. Let him do it all by himself: I give him a choice by saying, “I can wash your hair or you can wash your hair. What do you choose?” (Not washing his hair is not an option.) He will likely say, “Self!”
2. Look at the moon: We happen to have a light right above the bathtub, and Maxwell is infatuated with the moon. So, sometimes asking him to “Check out/ investigate the moon” works and then I can use a cup to wash and rinse his hair while he investigates the moon!
3. Stickers on the ceiling: This is the same idea as “Looking at the moon”, but at least with Max, nothing seems to work every night. So, I switch it up often! I put a few star stickers around the moon and then tell him to look at the stickers
4. Watch older sibling wash their hair: Sometimes a little peer pressure does the trick!
5. Watch/ help baby sister get her hair washed: Max doesn’t have an older sibling, but it does help to have him watch me wash Mila’s hair. I also let him use a cup to rinse her hair out and he loves that.
6. Let your toddler wash your hair and help pour water on your head.
7. Sit in sister’s baby chair: Again, this one only works if you have a baby in the house or maybe it’s a good excuse to whip out your old baby bath tub. If part of the hating hair washing is due to the child not liking water in their eyes, this is perfect! Let the toddler recline, and wash their hair with a cup!
8. New to him bath toys: To make washing Max’s hair a little more exciting, I let him pick a few toys from the kitchen to help get his hair wet. I’m talking about measuring cups, plastic cups, or bowls. I like to gather up about 5 and tell him to pick his favorite 3.
9. Take a shower: Sometimes just switching things up entirely and taking a shower will do the trick! Plus a shower can teach your toddler how to lean there neck back to let the water run down their head and wash out the soap.
10. Special toy: Allow your child to pick out one special bath toy that is only played with while their hair is getting washed. This is also called bribery, ha!
11. Goggles: Let your toddler pick out a pair of googles to wear in the bathtub to avoid water and soap getting in their eyes.
12. To lower the stress for you, consider minimizing hair washes to every other night or even every 2 nights.
13. Shampoo smell: I let Max pick out his shampoo at HEB. He picked SoCozy likely based on the peppermint smell and fun design on the bottle! But, I love that SoCozy products are non-toxic and made without parabens, formaldehyde, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic color, propylene glycol.
On the shampoo note, I also love that SoCozy Shampoo naturally scares away lice with tea tree and peppermint oil! You can find SoCozy products at an HEB near you. Oh and from 8/7 – 8/21, you can get $4 off! Do you have any other tips or tricks for getting your toddler to wash his or her without tears? I’d love to hear!
