Maxwell is sharing his favorite breakfast “recipe” thanks to our sponsor Disney-Hyperion!
Let’s talk about kids and food for a quick second. This is not a food blog for good reason, Mama can’t cook. Unfortunately, with 2 young kids, I end up cooking way more than I want to, ha! We have a handful of quick and easy “recipes” that both of my kids love. (Healthy oatmeal cookies anyone?) One of them is this yogurt and peanut butter dip, and as Maxwell says, “all da goodies on top”. This recipe is healthy and can be made in less than 5 minutes. My kids eat this concoction most mornings, and I’m not scared to give it to them for lunch or as an afternoon snack! Did I mention, I also love it.
So, what does our yogurt and peanut butter concoction have to do with the book Elephant & Piggie Like Reading! It’s Shoes Time!? Great question. Remember how I said I teamed up with Disney-Hyperion and Mo Willems for a 3 part series? In October we made Elephant and Piggie pumpkins, and in November we made monster pancakes in honor of Leonardo, the Terrible Monster and Sam, the Most Scardey-cat Kid in the Whole World. Today, we’re sharing a favorite recipe that is made with mismatched ingredients inspired by the book Elephant & Piggie Like Reading! It’s Shoe Time! where a “pair” is redefined.
It’s Shoe Time! is a rhyming story by Brian Collier where shoes come to life! (Max and I actually talked about personification!) The shoes owner is a young black girl who makes the decision to wear mismatched shoes on an adventure to meet her Dad. The 2 punny mismatched shoes go on their own silly adventure to find their mates and warn the little girl of her terrible mistake. I also love that Elephant and Piggie interrupt the story to help kids reflect on the story’s conflict.
After we read the story, Max and I talked about “pairs” of things. We discussed how 2 things that look the same make a pair. I asked him what body parts come in pairs. We have a pair of eyes, hands, and legs! We even discussed a pair of pants, and how although pants are only one thing, pants have 2 leg holes. It was a fun conversation starter. It’s also fun to note that mismatched socks came in the package with our It’s Shoe Time! book, you can see them above. He loves his mismatched socks!
How to Make Yogurt and Peanut Butter Dip
- Plain yogurt
- Peanut butter (we usually use creamy, but crunchy works too
- Cinnamon (optional)
- Granola (optional)
- Berries (optional)
- Pomegranate arils (optional)
The best part of this mismatched recipe is that you can’t mess it up! We typically do about 1/2 a cup of yogurt to 2 tablespoons of peanut butter. These are very loose measurements, but just to give you an idea. Mix it all together and voila! Mila is my dipper and Maxwell usually uses a spoon. It’s delicious either way!
It’s Shoe Time! is the newest addition to the Elephant & Piggie Like Reading! series, and just released in November of 2017. It would be so cute to pair It’s Shoe Time! with a few pairs of mismatched socks, and a lacing sneaker, if your little one does not know how to tie shoes yet.
I’d love to hear your go to snack concoction for kids? Yogurt and peanut butter dip sounds weird, but give it a try! I have an inkling you and your kids will love this healthy snack!
