Christmas is just around the corner, so when Crayola asked if I’d like to make Christmas crafts out of Crayola Glitter Dots, I was stocked! The kids and I whipped up DIY glitter ornaments with wood craft sticks, a glue gun, and glitter! Best part? The glitter dots are so easy to use, and you don’t have to worry about the entire bottle of glitter accidentally getting dumped on the floor. These DIY Christmas ornaments are the perfect craft to kick off the holiday season!
Here’s what you need to make DIY glitter ornaments
- 3 Wooden craft sticks- Two regular sized craft sticks and 1 mini craft tick per ornament. Alternatively, you could cut one 1 regular sized craft stick in half.
- Crayola Glitter Dot Sparkle Station– The kit comes with a hand roller, work mat, cutting wheels, work mat, and enough glitter dots to make 3-5 triangle ornaments.
- Hot glue gun
- Fishing line- Or yarn or string or ribbon.
How to make DIY Christmas ornaments
We glued the craft sticks into triangular shapes, but consider making stars, letters, or diamonds to change it up and make more DIY ornaments for the Christmas tree.
Step 1- Prep the ornament
First, don’t forget to plug in the hot glue gun and set in on something that won’t ruin the floors or table. (I like to use cardboard.) Next, cut a piece of fishing line about 8 inches long. Lay 3 wood craft sticks out in the shape of a triangle with the mini wood craft stick at the top of the the triangle. The fishing line will be sandwiched between the mini wood craft stick and the regular wood craft stick to allow the ornament to create a hanger.
Step 2- Hot glue the triangle together
Now that you have the ornament prepped, pick up the hot glue gun and make the magic happen! Make a small dollop of hot glue on one end of the mini sized wood craft stick and place one end of the fishing line in the dollop. Do the same thing to the to other side of the mini craft stick. Quickly place the regular sized wood craft sticks on top of the glue dollops to sandwich in the fishing line. Make sure the regular sized craft sticks are angled towards each other to form the bottom point of the triangle. Then, hot glue the end point of the triangle together.
Step 3- Roll out the glitter dots
Place 8-10 glitter dots on the work mat. Next, place one of the clear roller sheets on top of the glitter dots. Use the hand roller to mash and flatten the glitter dots. Blend the glitter dots together really well by rolling. Then, take the clear sheet off and use your fingers to fold the glitter sheet over in layers a few times. Add the clear sheet back, and continue using the hand roller. Repeat until you like how the glitter is blended together and the sheet is about as thick as a quarter.
Step 4- Add cutting wheel to roller
Once you have a glitter sheet marbleized to your liking and rolled out into a sheet the thickness of a quarter, it’s time to cut and apply to your ornament! To cut, remove the cutting wheel holder by gently pressing the knob and pulling the roller arm away until it snaps free. Then, add a single cutting wheel onto the holder. Insert the holder back into the roller arm tool and snap it back into place.
Step 5- Cut the glitter sheet
Lay the ornament on the glitter sheet and use the cutting wheel to a cut the first strip of glitter the same size as one side of the triangle. Use the craft tool to pull up the glitter sheet and place the cut line of glitter onto the ornament. Press the glitter sheet firmly onto the wood craft stick. (No glue needed!) Repeat this step with the other 2 sides of the ornament.
Step 6- Admire ornaments on the tree
Hang up the fancy glitter ornaments and be proud that you and your kids made them yourself! I love that the Glitter Dots stick to wood. You can see another ornament we made in the picture below with a simple bulb shaped wooden cut out and more Glitter Dots!
Do you make Christmas ornaments every year? I’d love to hear…
