I bought this flocked Christmas tree last year and I’m team flocked forever! I love the snow covered look especially since we live in Austin, Texas where it never snows. Our kid friendly, snow dusted Chrsitmas tree is adorned with three generations of handmade ornaments combined with tons of shatterproof ornaments and get this– yarn! Oh and if you’re stopping by from Kaleidoscope Living– welcome!
If you’re new here, we are selling our house in 2 days! Yep, you read that right. I put up Christmas decorations in early November so we could enjoy the season before our big move across town. My kids are 3 and 5 and I love Christmas, so ultimately I decided it was worth 5 weeks of Christmas cuteness even if it meant it would all come down before Christmas when we moved out. All of that to say, simple Chrsitmas decor was a necessity!
Simple Christmas Decor
I decided to go all out in 2 small spaces- the Chrsitmas tree that sits in front of the main window and the play kitchen in our other living space. You can see both in the shot below. We love the giant Santa advent that I got a few years ago from Pottery Barn Kids. It hangs from a single nail and makes a big impact with little effort. Plus, the kids love picking a card a day to countdown until Christmas.
Santa brought the IKEA play kitchen for the kids 2 years ago, and it is still one of the most used toys in our house. To be fair, it is the only toy that lives in our main living room, right next to the kitchen. Santa hacked the IKEA play kitchen with a little contact paper and spray paint. For the amount of use it gets, it has held up great!I decorated a small Christmas tree with ornaments from my childhood, gold disco balls for extra sparkle, and a strand of red felt balls.
The red toy truck is my son’s and every year I borrow it for Chrsitmas decorations. This year I realized it fit perfectly on the play kitchen shelf and it always holds a tiny bottle brush tree that is from the Target Dollar Spot.
Mila invented a new game it’s called, wipe yo’ face. I’m serious, she is hilarious. She was feeding me the Christmas cookies from the play kitchen and then declared my face was dirty. Also, the wooden Chrsitmas cookies are also from Target dollar spot and I wrapped one of her tea trays in foil to resemble a cookie sheet. She is obsessed with passing out those Christmas cookies!
What else? The “Oh what fun” is a garland from Pottery Barn Kids a few years ago, and I’ve used it to decorate many a Chrsitmas trees. Oringially, I cut the garland into 3 pieces to decorate this kid friendly Chrsitmas tree. Since I went flocked this year, the “Oh what fun” garland ended up on the wall with a few pieces of washi tape. Both rugs are stolen from other spots in the house. The braided rug is usually under my computer chair and the white fluffy one lives in a tent in Mila’s room. They add texture and coziness to this festive nook.
The white Christmas tree of my dreams is adorned in pink, cranberry, and mint DIY ornaments along with shatterproof bulbs straight from Home Depot. The star tree topper is also from Home Depot and the glitter stars are from Pottery Barn Kids a few years back. Here are the DIY ornament tutorials:
I did not decorate our mantle this year due to selling our house, but it’s looked almost identical to this the past 3 years. My mom cross stitched us the gorgeous stockings and I love buying a fresh pine garland since we always put up a fake Chrsitmas tree. The red candles are from IKEA and I make the pomander balls every year. They smell so good! Let’s pretend this is exactly what my mantle looks like right now!
