Add a little texture and warmth to the Christmas tree with these modern DIY wood ornaments. These wood bead ornament baubles only require 6 beads and fishing line. They’re so easy to make!
Here’s what you need to make DIY wood ornaments
- 3 wooden knobs or doll heads in varying sizes – In the picture above, notice the large wooden beads have one flat side? That is what makes a wooden doll head different than a wooden bead.)
- 1 pack of colored wooden beads
- Clear fishing line
- A drill and a 1/8in drill bit
How to make DIY wooden bead ornaments
Step 1- Drill holes
If you decide to use wooden beads with holes drilled all the way through, skip this step! I like the look of the wooden doll head because it feels less snowman-y. Typically, a wooden doll head only has a hole drilled half way through since you would not want or need a hole in the top of a doll head. To make these wood ornaments there needs to be a hole drilled all the wall through. To do this, simply use a 1/8in drill bit to complete the hole all the way through each wooden doll head.
Step 2- Start beading from the bottom
Now that there are holes in all of the beads, it is time to string! I like to tart at the bottom of the ornament. String 1 small wooden green bead onto the fishing line. Pull the fishing line through the green bead so that about 10 inches is hanging from either side of the wooden bead. Next, string a small dark brown wooden bead through both ends of the fishing line.
Step 3- Add large wood beads
Now, it’s time to add the 3 larger wooden beads. Start with the smallest of the wood beads and string it through both pieces of fishing line. Do the same thing with the next 2 wood beads. When this step is complete, there should be 5 beads on the fishing line with both ends of the fishing line coming out of the top of the largest wood bead.
Step 4- Tie the ornament
I used a small green wooden bead as the final bead. To tie the ornament off, string the green bead through one side of the fishing line. Bring the two pieces of fishing line back to together and tie them in 3 to 4 knots to ensure that the ornament does not come un tied.
Step 5- Hang!
Make as many of these as you’d like and hang them on the tree! Or package up a set of 5 and give them as a gift.
I’m curious, what would you call this wooden ornament? A wooden bauble? A wood bead ornament? I’d love to hear…
