I hosted an ornament making party for my daughter and a few of her friends this holiday season. We painted tiny canvases and drank hot chocolate and I honestly can’t wait to do it again next year. Eight is great and such a fun age for Christmas crafting! You can make ornaments with any age kiddo, here are 10 fun, easy ornaments to make with kids of all ages!
10 Easy ornaments to make with kids
Chrsitmas crafting is fun at any age, but some ornaments are easier to make than others. You know your audience best, but many of these DIY ornaments don’t involve paint or glitter and those might be best for the younger crowd, but paint and hot glue guns are fun for the 8+ kiddos to use!
1. Painted canvas ornements
All you need to make canvas ornaments are 2×2 wood framed canvases and screw eyes. You can hand screw in the eyes into the tiny canvases, but after a few we decided to get out the drill. We used scrap ribbon and twine to loop through the screw eyes and use as ornament hooks. We used the pointy side of the paintbrush to make the dots and these little plastic paint trays are great for kids and I love that they can be used again and again.
2. Scribble ornaments
These are the best ornaments to make with toddlers! The only extra supply you need for these handmade ornaments that you might not already own is a Christmas tree cut out. This 2 inch cut out is perfect and a great deal!
3. Finger print ornaments
Finger print ornaments are another great holiday craft for little ones. All you need is ink and something to stamp the ink on. These small red frame ornaments would be perfect to frame tiny reindeer fingerprints.
4. Orange peel ornaments
This orange peel wreath ornament involves eating which is always fun! All you need is wire, orange peels and red wooden beads. This is a great activity for eye hand coordination.
5. Yarn ornaments
These colorful, fun ornaments mimic snowflakes and are perfect for the kids to make. Use yarn, embroidery thread, or twine and up cycle card board to make these snowflake ornaments. Find the complete tutorial and lots more pretty pictures on Tauni Co.
6. Ugly sweater ornaments
All you need for these ugly Christmas sweater ornaments are white card stock, markers, random scraps and a paper clip to turn into the hanger!
7. Twig and yarn ornaments
These are the least expensive ornaments on the list since all you need are twigs and yarn! We love to maek these to hang on an outdoor Christmas tree.
8. Paintbrush Santa ornaments
Turn a used (or clean) paintbrush into Sant Claus with felt, paint and scissors.
9. Bird feeder ornaments
These are another great ornament idea for an outside tree and will help feed the birds through the winter. All you need is a toilet paper tube, peanut butter and bird seed!
10. Wood slice ornaments
I love these these wood sliced ornaments for classroom holiday parties. (Here’s a great deal on 30 wood slices!) I like to paint the centers white to give kids a blank slate to draw. Give kids a black permanent marker and let them finish the ornament with a little glitter nail polish to add sparkle!
