This DIY Dr. Seuss cake has quite a story behind it. I helped Annie with a cake commission… and I actually helped this time. (Instead of dancing around and eating icing.) She is the brains behind the operation, but I do what Ii’m told. This cat in the hat cake was the 2nd attempt in a 12 hour period! We didn’t get any great pictures because we were very tight with time. Here is the final product as we rushed it off to the birthday party!
It was my first time to use gum paste!
This piece of cake is made out of rice crispie treats and fondant. Yum!
Our first Cat in the Hat cake attempt was going to be a 3D hat, as you can kind of see in the picture below. Our fondant was to dry to say the least….we had to ditch this idea at 2am to begin plans for what was actually delivered at 11am on the same day! Yikes! We were going for a 3D Dr. Seuss Hat look and ended up with a slowly sinking marshmallow! Not our best work… but we learned a lot.
Have you ever worked with fondant? The big tip we learned was to use corn starch instead of powdered sugar when rolling out a piece of fondant! For more DIY cakes that turned out really well, don’t miss 9 DIY cakes for kids!

every cake disaster I have had has taught me something! Great final cake! best advice for fondant is keep it in a bowl with wet washcloth over to not let it dry out. p.s. great blog!
