Looking for a cute, easy DIY couples costume? These DIY Fred and Wilma Flintstone costumes fit the bill. (Fun fact: Did you know the first Flintstones episode aired in 1960?) The DIY Fred costume was found at Good Will for $5.00 and inspired me to make the Wilma Flintstone costume. I turned an XXL white mens t-shirt into a white one shoulder dress for $3!
What you need to make a Wilma Flintstone costume
- 1 White 3XL T-shirt OR a white dress
- Sewing machine
- 2-3 inch Styrofoam balls
- Orange hair spray
How to make a DIY Wilma costume
You need 3 main pieces to make an awesome Wilma Flintstone costume- white, one shoulder dress, “stone” necklace, and orange hair! The following steps lay out how to make a one shoulder dress in less than 15 minutes.
Step 1- Pin up t-shirt
First, I put the 3XL t-shirt on inside out and pinned up the sides to fit like a dress. Getting the dress is off is the tricky part.
Step 2- Sew
I used my sewing machine to sew 2 curved lines, using the pins as my guide, up the side of the white t-shirt.
Step 3- Cut off the shoulder
Next, I used scissors to cut the neck and shoulder off to make it a one shoulder dress. I left all the edges raw. I turned the 3XL mens t-shirt into a one shoulder dress in 15 minutes!
To make the Wilma necklace, I used an ice pick to punch a hole threw the 2 inch styrofoam ball, and then strung the styrofoam balls with a piece of string.
Our friends went as a tourist and a sailor. You can’t see his orange Croc’s in the picture above, but the whole costume was pretty entertaining. The old school camera actually worked too!

This is such a cute and easy idea! I should really get into making my own and my kids costumes. My mom used to do it for me when I was little, but I’m not to sure with my way around a sewing machine. I can hand stitch though so I got that going for me. Thank you so much for sharing with us at #ThrowbackThursday we hope to see you again this week!
