Not going to lie…I was a little scared of this project, but I am so happy I made my own DIY grommet curtains!
I bought 6 yards of fabric from IKEA for $5.99 a yard, and 2 twin size flat bed sheets to use as backing. I used 6 grommets for each panel, a little no sew tape from IKEA, and a little sewing machine action…
Tips for making DIY grommet curtains
- You must use an even number of grommets. That way both sides of the curtains will turn inward.
- Sew the bottom hem first with the sewing machine.
- Then, I used the no sew tape to make the final bottom hem, so you can’t see any stitches on the front
- The plastic grommets are super easy to put in, don’t be scared!
- With grommets, it is much better to make the hole to small them too big.
- The backing is only sewed down to 3 sides of each panel, the bottom of the backing is not sewn to the curtain fabric.

Love the look but grommets let in so much light. Not good if you want the black-out effect.
Thanks Jamie, you saved me from a big mistake. I have never done grommets before and I was going to use an uneven no. I am so glad I read your directions before I ruined my 104″ wide draperies.
Awesome, I’m trying to make curtains and I LOVE the fabric you used! Btw, artwork is also another easy DIY. Just get a large canvas, some paint colors that coordinate with your room, and a few of those pool foam squirty things. Then just squirt the paint all over the canvas, and call it abstract!
Looks great!
Where do you buy the grommets?
I bought grommets at Jo-Ann’s!
For the art….as seen on Pinterest……purchase a large poster you like, cut it in equal size pieces, put each piece separately on a canvas board, and hang each piece, with a gab between pieces. The look is awesome. Sorry I don’t know how to link the Pinterest suggestion.

I just finished some grommet curtains of my own… I'm curious if you've thought up other projects to do with the large grommets. I bought a huge bag of them and I'm itching to make something creative besides curtains… any ideas? amy @ http://www.nowhereofmiddle.com

Saw your link on Strut Your Stuff Thursday and had to come check it out. I'm sitting in my craft room right now and thinking about making curtains so this caught my eye. Thanks for the tips! The fabric looks great!
I love the large grommets. They slide so easily. I was going to make my own curtains for my boys' bedrooms but it was cheaper for me to buy them already made than to make them!
I forgot, here's my link =)
