Note: This post is sponsored by Amazon Prime. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
When I asked Mila what she wanted to be for Halloween this year, she had an instant response, “I want to be a pink flower!” I teamed up with Amazon Prime to make a DIY flower costume out of an Amazon cardboard box and craft supplies I have on hand. The only thing I love more than fast, free shipping is making my kids costume dreams come true. I decided to add the seed packet costume half way through because well… how cute is a seed packet and a flower costume for mom and daughter?!
I also made Daddy/ Daughter matching DIY flower costumes!
Here’s what you need to make a DIY flower costume
- Amazon smile box
- Pink and green spray paint
- Drop cloth
- Cardboard cutting utensil
- Pencil
- Hot glue gun
- Plate
How to make a flower costume
This DIY flower costume works well for a child or an adult. If you’re making it for a kid, make sure the stem is a good length for the height.
Step 1- Draw
Draw a flower shape on an Amazon smile box. Use a plate or bowl to make a round circle for the center of the flower. Next, using a pencil draw five loose heart shapes around the circle to resemble flowers. Flower petals aren’t perfect so don’t worry if they aren’t symmetrical. Then, use a pencil and draw the flower stem on a separate box. I cut my stem out in 1 piece with the 2 leaves attached to my stem, but you could easily draw and cut leaves out and hot glue them on separately.
Step 2- Cut
Use the cardboard cutting tool to cut the flower and stem out of the cardboard box.
Step 3- Spray paint
Lay the flower and the stem on a drop cloth outside and spray paint the color of your choice. It’s fair to note that I sprayed one of my flowers the yellow spray paint color you see in the picture below and did not like it. I simply spray painted over it with another color! Feel free to change your mind and make your flower any color!
Step 4- Hot Glue
Once you are happy with the color of your flower and stem, hot glue the stem to your flower. It’s that easy!
Here’s what you need to make a seed packet costume
- Amazon smile box
- White spray paint
- Various acrylic paint colors (yellow, green, pink, orange, blue)
- Cardboard cutting utensil
- Pencil
- Yard stick
- Hot glue gun
- Stickers, stencils, cutting machine (for the lettering)
- Straps from a reusable bag (or ribbon)
How to make a seed packet costume
I added the seed packet costume as an afterthought, but oh my goodness, I love it!
Step 1- Cut the cardboard box
Use your cardboard cutting utensil to cut the box to size. I made my seed packet 27 inches tall and 19 inches wide. I used one box to cut two pieces of cardboard the exact same size. Don’t forget to round the corners of your rectangle.
Step 2- Spray paint white
I knew a large part of the seed packet would be white, so I gave both pieces of cardboard 2 coats of white spray paint. This gave me a great base coat and covered up the writing and symbols on the cardboard box perfectly. Set one white piece of cardboard aside to use in step 6.
Step 3- Paint
Use green paint to create a rectangle of “grass” at the bottom of the seed packet. Make 3 green squiggle lines to represent the flower stems. Next, use yellow paint to create a smaller rectangle at the top of the seed packet. Be patient and let the paint dry. I know, I know this is the hardest part for me!
Step 4- Cut, spray, hot glue flowers
I wanted at least one flower on my seed packet to be the same color as Mila’s flower costume. The only way to make that happen was to cut the flowers out of cardboard and use the same pink spray paint on one of the flowers. While you’re waiting for the see packet to dry, cut 3 smaller flowers out of card board and take them outside to spray paint. Don’t forget to make 3 centers for each of the flowers too. I painted the centers with a mixture of acrylic paint and spray paint depending on the colors I had on hand. Then, hot glue the centers to each flower. Once the 3 flowers are dry, use a hot glue gun to adhere the flowers to the stems on the giant seed packet costume.
Step 5- Lettering
If I made this costume again, I would absolutely get out my Cricut Maker out and use that for the lettering! For whatever reason, I decided to do it all by hand. I don’t recommend that route. If you don’t have a cutting machine, consider using simple stickers or stencils to create the same effect. These 2 in adhesive letters will save you a ton of time!
Step 6- Straps
You’re almost done! I love to use straps from the reusable shopping bags, but if you are not reusable bag hoarder like me, ribbon, yarn, twine, or even strips of cloth will work perfectly. Cut each strap to be 15 inches long, and hot glue each strap to the top, back f the seed packet. You are making a sandwich board seed packet to wear over your chest. So fancy! Do a quick test to make sure the length works for you, and if so, hot glue the end of the straps to the other side of the board you cut out in Step 1.
I seriously love how it turned out! Oh and don’t forget the watering can as the candy holder!
