This is my 10th annual DIY Halloween costumes post! (Better late than never, right?!) I started documenting clever DIY costumes back in 2012 which was also the year I tried (and failed) to make us glow in the dark stick people costumes. (The stick figure costumes came to fruition in 2015!) Sadly, the kids aren’t asking for DIY costumes these days, they fall in love with store bought tacos and glow in the dark skeleton pjs, but we did make our pet gerbil a fun costume.
Andy and Max wore matching taco costumes and I whipped out my hippie pants and black Converse to chase my kids through the neighborhood. Our street does a block party, but inevitably all the kids want to do is trick or treat! I set up a DIY potion station complete with ghost cups and plastic cauldrons filled with baking powder. I had eyeballs, rats, shampoo, and various syringes for mixing up secret potions.
Mila has always loved making potions!
DIY Halloween Costumes 2022
As for DIY Halloween costumes 2022… Andy and I did not attend any costume parties this year, but I did run into a few amazing costumes!
1. DIY Gerbil costume
We bought our gerbil a taco costume to match Andy and Max, but it turned out to be too big. I think the costume was meant for a guinea pig. Anyway, the kids were determined to dress up Jerry the gerbil so we turned him into spaghetti and meatballs! All you need is 1 skein of cream yarn, a few large red pom poms, and a big bowl! Jerry loved his costume!
2. Starbucks mermaid costume
We went to Starbucks on Halloween and our barista was dressed up as the Starbucks mermaid! So creative, cute, and fun!
3. Jewelry box ballerina baby costume
My friend, Emily, dressed her adorable baby up as a jewelry box ballerina. I’m obsessed!
