I’m kind of obsessed with our Christmas tree this year! I teamed up with Home Depot for their 2018 Holiday Style Challenge, and used their pastel colored, shatterproof ball ornaments as a jumping off point for a whimsical, vintage inspired flocked tree. The vintage part of our tree comes from three generations of handmade ornaments.
I wanted to add a little extra handmade whimsy to our tree, and was inspired by the PVC pipe aisle at Home Depot. These DIY Snowman ornaments are super simple to make and cost about a dollar each to make!
Here is what you need to make PVC pipe snowman ornaments
- 1 Small peice of PVC pipe (I used 3/4 inch)
- 1 Bigger peice of VC pipe (I used 1.25 inch)
- Hot glue gun
- Ribbon scraps
- Bakers twine
Pro tip: If you are planning on making more than 20 modern snowman ornaments, it would be less expensive to buy full sized PVC pipes and cut the pipes with a saw. I only made 5 ornaments so it made more sense to buy individual pieces in the plumbing aisle at Home Depot.
How to make modern DIY snowman ornaments
Now that you’ve got your supplies, it’s time to craft! These DIY ornaments are seriously so easy to make.
Step 1- Hot glue
Heat up the hot glue gun and glue the smaller PVC pipe peice on top of the larger PVC pipe peice. Pro tip: Each peice has a bar code on it. I found it worked best to hot glue the bar codes to each other.
Step 2- Make scarf
Use a scrap peice of ribbon to loop around the center of the snowman ornament. I used a dab of hot glue to ensure the scarf stayed in place. I used a thick chunky pink yarn as a scarf. For another scarf I cut off 2 sections of a tiny felt pom pom ribbon and glued that to the end of each peice of scarf ribbon to make it look like scarf fringe.
Step 3- Make a hanger
I used bakers twine and regular twine as hangers. Simply, cut a 6-8 inch peice of twine and wrap it through the head of snowman. Tie a knot and hang. Easy peasy.
Here’s a close up picture of one of the scarves I made with ribbon and tiny pom pom trim. I love the modern, simple snowman look on our tree!

So fun, right? Who knew PVC pipes made such cute ornaments? Looking for more ornaments to make with kids? Don’t miss:
