My 3 year old daughter has so many Halloween costume ideas! As you know, I love DIY Halloween costumes, so I was excited to hear what costume ideas she had in mind. Girlfriend did not disappoint. Best part? She involved Daddy! Her first costume idea was a pink flower for Mila and a purple flower for Daddy. I hope I made these DIY flower costumes exactly how she was imagining.
Here’s what you need to make a DIY flower costume
- 1 Sturdy paper plate per flower costume
- Foam sheets (purple, pink, green)
- Sturdy yellow felt
- Scissors
- Hole punch
- String
- Safety pins
- Hot glue gun
- Green toddler dress
How to make a DIY flower costume
These paper plate flower costumes work well for kids and adults. Another fun DIY flower costume idea is for one parent to be a seed packet and the child to be a flower. I also love the idea of a flower pot costume! This flower costume tutorial makes great last minute costume!
Step 1- Cut paper plate
First, use scissors to cut out the center out of a paper plate. Depending on the shape of your head, you might want to make the center of the paper plate more oval or more round. Start with a smaller hole, and cut the paper plate fit the face of the costume wearer.
Step 2- Cut out petals
Now it’s time for the flower crafting! For the purple flower, I cut 11 simple, pointy petals. For the pink flower, I cut 9 long, rounded petals. I also cut a smaller dark pink centers for each of the 9 pink petals. Foam sheets are super easy to cut with regular scissors, so don’t be scared to trim petals if they are too big or too long. I mimicked a daisy shape for the pink flower and a sunflower for the purple one. Get creative with petal shapes and flower types!
Step 3- Hot glue
Once all of the petals are cut out, use a hot glue gun on low heat to glue the petals to the back of the paper plate.
Step 4- Cut centers and hot glue
To make the purple flower, I cut a 2 in strip of yellow felt into fringe. Then, I cut the large strip of yellow felt into 2-3 inch segments and hot glued them around the center of the flower. For the center of the pink flower, I used a purple foam sheet. Place the foam sheet under the flower and trace the center cut out. Then make a simple scallop around the circle that was just drawn. Next, cut out the shape so that it perfectly fits on top of the center of the flower.
Step 5- Attach string
Turn the flower over and use a hole punch to punch two holes in the paper plate. Cut 2 pieces of string or ribbon that are at least 18 inches long each. Tie one peice of string through the hole punch and double knot. Do that same thing to the other side of the paper plate.
Step 6- Stem
For my daughter, I bought her a solid green dress to act as the stem. (This dress is perfect!) I also like that she can wear the dress long after Halloween too. I cut a few leaves for her to hold and was considering using a safety pin or velcro to attach to her dress, but she did not like that idea, ha! For the DIY adult flower costume, I cut a two, 4.5 inch wide pieces of green foam and safety pinned them to a white t-shirt. I cut our 2 simple leaves and safety pinned those to the stem and white t-shirt too.
Step 7- Butterfly extra credit
I wish I would have made a butterfly to stick on the flower costume! How cute would that have been? Or what about this adorable butterfly headband?!
Mila sure is lucky to have a Daddy that is willing to dress up as a purple flower! Looking for more DIY kid costume ideas, don’t miss:
