Our current house does not have a play room, it has something even better! We call it the kid cave. It’s a large under the stairs storage closet that houses every single toy in our house and provides a cozy little nook for relaxing. The door is full sized, but most of the closet space is only 5 feet tall and the ceiling declines as it goes under the stairs into the reading nook. I wanted a sign that made it very clear what was behind this door. I used my Cricut Joy to cut vinyl and used it as a stencil to create a painted wood sign for our modern kids play room!
What you need to make a modern kids playroom sign
- Wood plaque <– This is the exact one I used.
- Cricut Joy
- Smart Vinyl in black
- Transfer tape
- Scraper tool (or credit card)
- Paint
- Pain brush
- Command picture hanging strips
How to make a Kid Cave sign
I’m obsessed with my Cricut Joy and my kids love their under the stairs modern kids playroom so this project was a win for everyone!
Step 1- Open Cricut Design Space App
Once you have the Cricut Joy set up on the Cricut Design Space™ app, simply tap the blue “New Project” rectangle in the top left corner of the screen.
Step 2- Tap text and size
At the bottom of the screen you will see a “Text” icon, tap it. The “Insert Font” box allows you to choose the font you want to use for your project. DIN 1451 is my go to font for signs and labels. It’s clean, easy to weed, and easy to read. Typically, I use all caps. Next, type “The Kid Cave” into the font box. Then, size the sign to fit the dimensions of the wood plaque. I always make the letters a tad closer together with the “Edit” and “Letter Space” buttons. For the kid cave sign, the letter spacing is 0.7.
Step 3- Make it
Tap the green “Make It” button in the bottom right hand corner and the “Load Type” screen will appear. If you are using a Cricut Joy Smart Vinyl, tap “Without Mat”.
Step 4- Select accessory
The next screen you will see is the “Mat 1 of 1″ screen. This screen tells you how much vinyl you need for this project.
Step 5- Set & Load material
This screen allows you to “Set material”. For the project, I am using “Smart Vinyl- removable” and it pops right up in the popular materials list. Now, it’s time to “Load Tools and material”.
Step 6- Tap go
The App will say “Preparing” and then “Cutting”. It will show you how much time is left for the cut. Lastly, tap the unload button and you’re vinyl label is cut!
Step 7- Trim & Weed
First, trim around the label with scissors. Next, weed the vinyl or remove access vinyl from around the sign. Now, cut a peice of transfer tape a little bit larger than the sign and use a scraper tool (or credit card) to transfer the sign to the transfer sheet.
Step 8- Adhere the vinyl to the sign
Next, place the transfer tape with vinyl label on the wood plaque and use the scraper tool to adhere it to the wood. Then, peel the transfer tape and admire.
Step 9- Paint the sign
In this instance, I am using the vinyl as a stencil show that the wood will show through. So, now it’s time to paint over the vinyl! Use a a paint brush and carefully paint the wood sign. I like to use the paintbrush to pull the paint away from the letter.
Step 10- Peel off vinyl & hang
Once the paint is fully dry, carefully peel off the vinyl letters. Then, hang up “The Kid Cave” sign on the door with picture hanging strips and admire your masterpiece!
Next week, I’m going to use my Cricut Joy to bring a little more organization to our modern kids play room, or kid cave as we like to call it! Do you have a dedicated play room? Or under the stair storage closet turned modern play room? Oh and if you’re looking for more Circut projects, don’t miss this!
